Controlling my spots has always been a constant battle for me. Scarring, oily skin, redness and sore- why put up with it?
Although so many teenagers suffer from this, many think it is a phase- something that you simply have to put up with during your teenage years, but I couldn't disagree more!
Suffering from this problem myself since the age of 14, I am aware of the effects it can have on self esteem. Staying in bed seemed more appealing than going to a party and having to complete my never-ending skin routine to cover my spots.
Trying every spot clearing product on the shelves and slapping on the concealer and foundation to cover my insecurity only worsened the condition of my skin.
It can be frustrating, especially when teenagers are exposed to the 'perfectly polished' models and celebrities sprawled across the pages of glossy magazines; an unrealistic, Photo shopped version of what a natural girl/boy should look like.
The doctors should always be an option, but I wanted off the shelf products that I could incorporate into my everyday skin routine that would over time clean and clear my skin.
My first recommendation is Lush products for acne:
The Lush acne skin range has worked miracles on my skin! Made from completely natural ingredients, they work deep into the skin to prevent outbreaks in the long run unlike most off the shelf products that clear skin quickly but do not clean, therefore breakouts are more likely to appear when coming off the product.
The Tea tree toner water is perfect for antibacterial action as well as clarifying and can easily be incorporated into your everyday skin routine. I use this as a toner twice a day- close your eyes tightly and spritz directly onto the face, or onto cotton wool pads to wipe away any dirt. The spray also refreshes the face and can be used at any time during the day! Available in two different sizes, how about using the smaller one as a handbag essential?
My second Lush recommendation is the 'Cupcake face mask':
Who doesn't love a pamper in the comfort of your own home? Face masks have always been a favourite of mine- fresh and revitalising, why not use a mask that targets acne as well as achieving the same fresh feeling as any other skin mask?
There are a range of Lush masks that meet this criteria, but I use the 'Cupcake chocolate heaven for oily and teenage skin', and incorporated into my daily routine, I found that it deeply cleansed my skin creating a fragranced fresh feeling. It also removes excess oil- a problem I have always had- as well as cleaning and soothing the skin with a combination of cocoa butter, peppermint and sandalwood oils.
Instead of caking on the makeup to cover spots, cake on the Cupcake face mask for long term acne prevention!
My last recommendation is 'Dual action Quinoderm':
The one product I have always relied on when I have skin emergencies is Quinoderm! Containing the key spot clearing ingredient, Benzoyl Peroxide- it will reduce spot redness and size in just a few hours, allowing me to transform from hibernation into a social butterfly!
I use this cream twice a day- morning and night- so that it constantly prevents outbreaks 24/7. However, when trying the product for the first time it's important to have your favourite moisturiser on the ready because this product evaporates all the oil that develops into breakouts! (as I learnt). A reliable moisturiser will lock in the essential oils so that your skins natural balance is maintained.
This is the only spot preventing cream that I have used that hasn't been prescribed and has managed to keep my skin spot free when using or not using the product- long term success!
With my three recommended products, your spots will have a job trying to fight your new beauty routine. Don't let the myth of 'teenage spots' take control of your life- fight back!
And don't forget: healthy eating and drinking plenty of water will act as a natural barrier against breakouts anyway, these products should just help you on your way to perfect skin!
Good luck!
